The eldest son of James I and Anne of Denmark, Henry was by all accounts a remarkable prince, intelligent, learned, excelling in feats of arms and an informed, enthusiastic patron of the arts. A fervent Protestant, Henry took an avid interest in foreign affairs and highly approved of the choice of Frederick, Elector Palatine as a husband for his sister Elizabeth. He died suddenly, probably of typhoid, at the age of eighteen, when the preparations for this marriage were already in hand.
