After studying at Cambridge, Hyndman worked as a war correspondent on the Pall Mall Gazette reporting on Garibaldi's advances in Italy and becoming fascinated by European nationalism. A substantial inheritance allowed him to combine business interests with political activism. Influenced by Karl Marx, Hyndman determined to establish a new political party aimed at 'the direct representation of labour'. The Democratic Federation was inaugurated in June 1881 and later became the Social Democratic Federation. Hyndman was a leading figure during the labour agitations of the 1880s and a distinctive voice in the socialist movement up to his death in 1921. The SDF became affiliated with the Labour Party in 1918.
