Kneller was born in Germany and settled in London in 1676. He had an extraordinarily successful career as the dominant portrait painter of the period, working as Court Painter for five different monarchs.

Harry Bridges was the second son of Sir Thomas Bridges who, as Governor of Bath, received Charles I in 1644 on his way to join his army in Cornwall. Harry was appointed Sheriff of the County of Somerset.
