Henry Foster built the Mills at Denholme, a village near Haworth, and according to family tradition was a drinking companion of Branwell Brontë. This half-length portrait differs from Branwell's usual style, in that it is only about half the size of most of his other portraits, the paint is layered in a different way and it is heavily varnished. Oral tradition maintains that it was painted in Branwell's local drinking place, 'The Black Bull'.
