This painting of Henry Cavendish’s gas balance is part of a series depicting scientific apparatus on display in the Royal Institution’s museum. Cavendish was one of the founders of the Royal Institution in 1799. He was one of the wealthiest men in Britain and well respected as a man of science but very shy and solitary by nature, barely ever speaking in public and communicating with his household staff through written notes. He is known for his discovery of hydrogen and for the experiment in which he first weighed the earth. Because of his eccentric nature he seldom spoke about much of his research. Long after his death his unpublished notebooks were found to contain independent discoveries of many things which were later found by others.
