Three-quarter-length portrait in which the beautifully balanced figure of the sitter is seen in profile in the act of jotting down some notes with a pencil held in his right hand poised over a notebook resting on his thigh.

The portrait has a warm tonality thanks to the brown of the ground showing through the thinly applied paint. The careful attention to the head is in contrast to the freely painted cloak flung over the back of the chair. The plain background wall is enlivened by the shadow of the sitter. One of the finest Victorian portraits in the collection, despite it being unfinished as a result of the death of the sitter in medias res.
