Henry was the son of William Airay, influenced by Bernard Gilpin, the ‘apostle of the North’, and was among the first to benefit from the school erected and endowed by Gilpin in the parish. In 1579, aged about 19, Airay was sent to St Edmund Hall. Soon afterwards he moved to Queen's College where he became a Fellow and, in 1599, Provost. He was a zealous Calvinist. The coat of arms is that of the Airay family.
