The original portrait of Hendrickje Stoffels (d.1663) was painted by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669). Stoffels was part of Rembrandt's household, initially as housekeeper and nurse to his son Titus, later she became Rembrandt's mistress. This copy which is undated was painted by the Irish artist James Barry who painted ‘The Progress of Human Knowledge and Culture’ for the Society’s Great Room.
