One of four artworks acquired in the wake of the important and pioneering exhibition 'Mid-European Art' held at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery in February 1944. Nolde's drawing was included in this exhibition under (no.49) as 'The Mask'. It was purchased from Tekla Hess, née Pauson (1884–1968) in 1944. The others were by Pechstein, Marc, and Feininger.
