This unfinished portrait of an unknown lady is presumably the result of one sitting and demonstrates why customers flocked to Thomas Lawrence's studio. He had no serious rival as a portraitist and, in addition, was a handsome, personable man who had been well received in society and easily achieved a rapport with his sitters. When he died, suddenly, in 1830 there were about 150 unfinished portraits in his studio. Some had been started many decades before; this one has been tentatively dated to the early years of the century. He often had more work than he could cope with and he also consistently disappointed his clients with his unbusinesslike ways. Lawrence enjoyed using the medium of oil paint and his brushwork is always crisp and lively.
