This portrait of Harry Bell, Rector of Dollar Academy from 1936 to 1960, was painted in 1956 on the centenary of the death of Dr Andrew Mylne, the first Rector of Dollar Academy. Harry Bell, OBE, MA, BEd was born in Aberdeen in 1899. His brilliant academic career began with a scholarship to Robert Gordon’s College and, after serving in the First World War in Macedonia, he graduated with a double 1st from Aberdeen University in English Language and Literature. He went on to Clare College, Cambridge where he was elected a Foundation Scholar. He began his teaching career at Glasgow Academy in 1927, moving to Elgin Academy as headmaster in 1933. In January 1936 he took up the appointment of Rector of Dollar Academy, a post he filled with distinction until 1960.
