Alexander attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He commanded a battalion on the Western Front, winning the MC in 1915 and the DSO in 1916. He was a member of the Allied Relief Commission in Poland (1919–1920) and fought in Latvia. He and Montgomery together supervised the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. Appointed Commander-in-Chief, Middle East, Alexander prepared for El Alamein and, with Montgomery and Eisenhower, achieved victory in North Africa (1943). He was promoted to Field Marshal, and as Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean drove the Germans out of Italy (1943–1945). After the War, Alexander served as Minister for Defence (1952–1954).
