Harold Sawyer was educated at Queen's. Headmaster of St Bees School, 1903–1916; Headmaster of Shrewsbury School, 1916–1932, Canon of Carlisle, Honorary Fellow, Queen's, 1932, and Fellow and Chaplain of Corpus Christi College, Oxford from 1933. The Shrewsbury School arms are in the painting upper right. The artist was the son of Briton Rivière and studied at the Royal Academy Schools and specialised in portraits.
