Juliet McMaster, a descendant of the artist, explains that James Clarke Hook spent the summers of 1875 and 1876 in Hallsands and nearby Hope Cove, and painted a number of works there. This painting was painted at Hallsands in Devon, a village finally washed away in a storm in 1917, after dredging had removed its protection.
