Taking inspiration from his nearby surroundings, Watson depicts the two sides of the entrance to Aberdeen harbour, close to where he lived at Footdee. He was particularly interested in the red and green complementary colours of the harbour lights and how these would create a mixture of colour when brought together towards a central point.

Watson was the leading figure in the establishment of the Peacock print studios in Aberdeen in 1974; he was Director there for 20 years. He is currently President of the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture.
