This painting is one of a series of views of Hampstead Heath, all the same small size, produced by Constable in the 1820s. In all of these views the sky plays a prominent part. In this example the shower of rain swiftly moving over the landscape, with the dark clouds plunging the foreground into shadow, has caught the artist’s attention.
