The Mausoleum was built for Alexander, 10th Duke of Hamilton as a chapel and family tomb. Construction began in 1840 and took 15 years to complete. It stands on a three-arched eastern terrace with flanking lions on a podium and right-angled stairways. The keystone heads represent Life, Death and Immortality. There is a square-plan channelled podium with stepped base courses and a simple architrave square-headed west entrance. The middle stage is pilastered in five bays and there is a rectangular panel in the central bay. There are arch-headed panels in the outer bays and a rusticated rotunda above rising into a dome. The doors are based on Ghibertis' in Florence. The chapel interior has a rich polychrome marble floor and a tall eight-bay arcade with semi-domed chambers in angles.
