The work is based on a detail of the architecture project Habitat which was designed as a pavilion by architect Moshe Safdie for Expo 67, the World’s Fair held in Montreal, Canada in 1967. An architectural detail of the Habitat structure was incised into the surface of the canvas by a process of building up layers of the acrylic paint over a masking tape pattern. Once the masking tape was removed, the final coats of the cryla acrylic unified the canvas surface. The work was made as the artist's diploma composition in 1970, their graduating year at Edinburgh College of Art.
