In 1871, MacCormac was appointed assistant-surgeon at St Thomas' Hospital. In 1873 he was made a full surgeon and for twenty year continued his work here as a surgeon, lecturer on surgery and consulting surgeon. He was appointed President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1896. Born in Belfast, MacCormac studied at Queen's College Belfast, before studying surgery in Berlin. He practised in Belfast. He volunteered in the Franco-Prussian War and was knighted in 1881. This original watercolour was published in Vanity fair in 1896, as part of the ‘Men of the Day' series.
