In early August 1291, the three Cantons of Schwyz, Uri and Unterwald, in what is now central Switzerland, swore an oath of confederation, the Pacte du Grutli (the Rütlischwür) on the meadow of Rütli. This action came to be regarded as the founding of Switzerland.

This is a view from Brunnen on the northern bank of Lake Lucerne, looking across its Urnersee arm to Rütli (Grutli). The snow-clad Uri Rostock or Rotstock (altitude 2,928 meters) rises in the distance beyond.
