The sitters were thought to be the daughters of William Mason, but he only had one daughter. The painting belonged to a Thomas Mason of Dedham (c.1757–1829), not related to William Mason. It is likely that the sitters are the Cooper sisters of Woodhouse Farm, Stratford St Mary. A label on the back states that the painting was left to Thos. Mason by a Mrs Simpson. ‘Mrs Simpson of Hadleigh Suffolk’, is now identified as Hannah Cooper (1792–1862), Thomas Mason’s great aunt. Hannah was born in Stratford St Mary, the youngest daughter of William Beaumont Cooper (1753–1812) and Elizabeth Cooper (née Green, 1763–1828). William Beaumont Cooper had four daughters. In addition to Hannah, there was Elizabeth (1783–1856), Ann (1784–1831) and Bridget (1786– 1845).
