In the spring of 1936 Philpot travelled with his friend, Tony Harris, to Spain and then Morocco where they visited Fez, Casablanca and Moulay Idriss. This painting depicts a group of women wearing their traditional burnous cloaks. During the early 1930s Philpot took a studio in Paris and influenced by modern French art, his work developed a more contemporary feel. In this painting, the women are portrayed through the outline of their outfits and almost disappear into the background of the painting.
