Griffith Owen (1750–1833) was butler and harpist to the Corbet family of Ynysymaengwyn, Merioneth, and is here shown standing in the hallway holding a volume of music by Handel. His employers clearly thought much of him, as they commissioned this portrait from the fashionable sporting artist Benjamin Marshall when he painted a Corbet family group. An old label records that the painting 'was drawn' when Owen heard of the death of Mrs Corbet, 'his Ever to be-lamented Mistress'.
