Designed by Christopher Fratin, one of several French designers used by the Coalbrookdale Company. A version was displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Jury reports for the Exhibition describe Fratin as 'the most celebrated sculptor of animals in France at the present day'. The sculpture features in both the 1875 Coalbrookdale Company catalogue (No. 159) and the 1877 catalogue (No. 159).
