Anne Redpath was born in Hawick in Scotland before attending the Edinburgh College of Art from 1913–1917. In 1919 she won a travelling scholarship and travelled to Bruges, Paris, Florence and Siena. She was particularly struck by the painting of the Sienese ‘primitives’, an influence which stayed with her throughout her career, as well as by the work of Bonnard, Vuillard and her fellow Scottish colourists. Redpath said in 1961, ‘I do feel so concerned about the things I paint, whether they are houses or altars, or just objects on a still life. When I paint cups on a table they are something more than cups on a table – they are just like houses on a landscape... they have a kind of strength about them which they didn’t used to have.
