Although primarily known as a painter of figures and landscapes, Vaughan painted a series of still lifes in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Vaughan was an ardent admirer of Cézanne and described in his journal how Cézannes paintings affected him in a ‘total, almost physical way’. 'Green Jug' also demonstrates Vaughan’s interest in the work of Picasso and Braque and he had visited exhibitions of both artists work in 1946.
