Victor Noble Rainbird was born in North Shields, and lived all his life in the town, initially in Sidney Street, then West Percy Street, and finally in Howard Street. He trained at Tynemouth School of Art, King’s College, Newcastle (now Newcastle University), and the Royal Academy Schools, where he was recognised as an outstanding student. After serving in the First World War in the Northumberland Fusiliers and the Durham Light Infantry, he became a professional artist.
