Born in Newcastle in 1841, Hemy's first passions were for the sea and his Catholic faith. In his twenties he settled on becoming a painter. Part of his artistic training took place in Antwerp where he produced religious scenes. He illustrated his travels round England before settling in a large house in Falmouth to concentrate on painting marine scenes, always 'from life'.

This painting is typical of Hemy's earlier works, when he worked in a style influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite artists. He emphasised naturalistic detail and placed calm, thoughtful figures in his landscapes. Here he depicts a mother and child near the River Thames with a boatman in the background. The mill still stands today.
