Coombs was a founder member of the Society of Wildlife Artists and a doctor in general practice for 35 years. He was a keen ornithologist. His main area of interest was European corvids, the family including rooks, ravens and magpies, and he wrote and illustrated a book on these species. This painting was shown at the Society for Wildlife Artists exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London in 1980.
