George Earl painted two versions of this painting and exhibited them at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1876 and 1893. This version is the earlier and was painted in 1875. It presents us with a wonderful insight into the lives of wealthy Victorians as they depart from King's Cross Station for the season in Scotland. If you look closely you will see the hunting dogs, fishing tackle and other sporting paraphernalia necessary for the outdoor life. We also get a sense of the hustle and bustle of the railway station. Earl’s painting is often compared to the work of William Powell Frith, another painter of railway scenes. The painting was given to Wigan Council by Alexander Young in 1922 with the hope that the people of Wigan would enjoy and learn from it.
