Sir Godfrey Webster, 4th Baronet poses for his portrait in front of the skyline of Florence. Painted from a south-westerly position, the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore and the Palazzo Vecchio can be seen in the background. In the foreground, fragments of classical architecture, similar to those Webster would have seen on the Grand Tour, lie on the ground.

He is well dressed in a navy coat trimmed with gold, yellow breeches and white stockings.

The painting was commissioned by Henry Richard Fox (1773–1840), 3rd Baron Holland as part of a group of three. The other two portraits were of himself and of Webster’s wife Elizabeth Vassall (1770–1845), who went on to divorce Webster and marry Holland.
