Seven pilgrims stand under a cross in a small ship which sails on stylised steep waves. The sculpture represents the lengthy and precarious crossing made by early explorer Bartholemew Gosnold on his first expedition of 1602. Sailing in the relatively small 'Concord' with a crew of twelve, and twenty potential settlers, he crossed the Atlantic and landed in Cape Cod, naming Martha’s Vineyard. But he returned empty handed, having failed to establish a settlement. Gosnold’s second expedition of 1607, when he established a colony at Jamestown, is celebrated in another artwork – Dan Savage’s 'Beyond the Horizon', on Orwell Quay, Ipswich.

plaque: GODSPEED V / JONATHAN CLARKE / This cast Aluminium sculpture was created as a vision of hope and / speaks of pilgrimage and journey. By coincidence ‘Godspeed’ was / also the name of the ship Bartholomew Gosnold, one of the / earliest explorers of New England set sail in 1606. Gosnold / worshipped at this church and named Martha’s vineyard after his / daughter who was baptized and buried here. / This sculpture was acquired with the generous help of the Jerusalem Trust / and a bequest from the late Mrs. Ena Alice Bensley
