Located on the landing at the top of the south stairwell, this portrait was until recently incorrectly identified as Sir George and Lady Bullough’s daughter Hermione. The work, clearly signed and dated 1901, depicts a young girl of about 12 years of age, with long auburn hair, wearing a green riding habit comprising tailored jacket with long skirt, a tailored shirt with neck-tie, low-heeled boots, gloves and a white pom-pom cap. Holding a riding crop in her left hand, she sits side-saddle on a chestnut horse with bold face blaze and four stockings (the white markings on the horse’s legs). A snow-covered peak is visible through a gap in the background trees. However, Hermione Bullough was not born until 5th November 1906, four years after White painted the picture.
