This work is one of a pair with another Italian School painting in the Torre Abbey collection, 'Boy with Accordion'. Both figures in these paintings are wearing traditional Italian peasant dress, conveying a distinctly Italian flavour. The portrayal of these young figures is also idealised. Their style of costume tells us that the boy and girl are peasants and the boy is even holding out his hat for donations, but their clothes are well kept and they look very healthy. In both cases we are presented with a romanticised view of Italian culture – ideal for a souvenir.
