Dateable c.1770, 'Girl with a Gauze Scarf' was acquired by the 4th Marquess of Hertford together with 'Boy with a Dog' (Greuze P419). Yet, although they are framed in the same manner and were once thought to be pendants, they differ in size, handling and approach. 'Girl with a Gauze Scarf' is much simpler in composition and recalls the pastoral shepherdesses of Boucher (q.v.), though treated with the heightened sensibility and focus upon individual expression characteristic of Greuze.
