This plaster bust is a copy after an original in marble by William Behnes, dated 1822, now at the National Portrait Gallery, London. London-born Behnes was brought up in Dublin and studied at the Dublin Academy before returning to London, where he continued his studies at the Royal Academy. He became a successful sculptor, mainly producing portrait busts in a cool, unsentimental manner that was well suited to his aristocratic and military sitters. George Tierney was an Anglo-Irish Whig politician, famed for revealing to the public the extent of the Prince Regent’s extravagant spending on the furnishing of Carlton House. This bust was one of a group in plaster which formerly lined the walls of the Fountain Garden at Holland House in West London.
