Governor of Madras; Pigot arrived in India in 1737 and was first appointed Governor of Madras in 1755. Between 1758 and 1759, he led the defence of that city against invasion. His second term as Governor of Madras, in 1775, did not end so proudly. At odds with his council over the restoration of the Raja of Tanjore he eventually regained his majority by preferring charges against two members and thus debarring them from voting. Hearing of this corruption, the Council had him arrested. Though he was pardoned and restored to office by an English court, the news of his death, in prison, one week before had not yet reached England.
