George Mackay Brown (1921–1996), MBE, was a poet, author and playwright, who was inspired by his native Orkney's Norse history and sagas, folklore, landscape and people and also by his conversion to Roman Catholicism. His volumes of poetry include 'Loaves and Fishes', 'The Year of the Whale' and 'The Storm', and his novels, 'Greenvoe', 'Hawkfall', 'Vinland' and 'Magnus'. A collaboration with composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies on a libretto for the music-drama 'The Martyrdom of Magnus', based on his novel, launched the St Magnus Festival in 1977.
