Carey was born in London in 1935 and as a teenager in Dagenhamhe became a Christian. It was during this time he met his future wife Eileen, and they married in 1960. He served in the Royal Air Force in Egypt and Iraq. After training for the ministry at the London College of Divinity and King's College London, he ministered in London, serving as a Curate at St Mary's Islington and Lecturer in Theology at Oakhill College. Between 1970–1975 he lectured at St John's College Nottingham and then became Vicar of St Nicholas, Durham. From 1982–1987 he was Principal of Trinity Theological College and then he came to Bath and Wells. In 1991 he became the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1990 he received the freedom of the City of Wells.
