Labour politician and pacifist; Editor of the Daily Herald, a rallying point for opponents of the First World War, supporters of the Russian Revolution and, later, critics of the Labour leadership. Lansbury led the Party after the split caused by Macdonald's formation of a National Government in 1931. An ardent believer in unilateral disarmament, he visited Hitler in 1937 to make a plea for peace.
