A studio version of the original 1818 portrait by Lawrence (when George was still Prince Regent), this portrait was not present at the Guildhall until 1832, when it was given as a gift to the city by King William IV. Lawrence's flattering portrait presents George IV as a national hero, although he is better known for his extravagant and frivolous lifestyle, and famously poor relations with his father, his wife, and his government.
