This portrait was probably commissioned by the Corporation of Bristol to hang in the Mansion House in Queen Square. Displaying a portrait of the King demonstrated Bristol's patriotism and loyalty. It narrowly escaped destruction during the Bristol Riots of October 1831 when a mob set fire to the Mansion House. Edward Bird, a Bristol School artist, usually worked on a much smaller scale and this was an ambitious work for him. It seems to be based on a portrait by Thomas Lawrence of about 1809, which showed the King as a younger man, dressed in Robes of State with the collar of the Garter.
