George Harriman began his career at a young age. As he was from Coventry this was naturally in the motor industry, an industry he never left. Harriman progressed steadily through the ranks at Morris before moving to rival Austin. When the two companies merged in 1952 to form the British Motor Corporation, he was already a director and a decade later became Managing Director, then Chairman, finally being knighted in 1965. His career ended on a high as President of the recently formed British Leyland. Harriman had a reputation as a reserved, level-headed businessman, as well as a proficient sportsman, playing rugby at county level.
