Dr Abercrombie practised in Hampstead. As Chairman of the Awards Committee, Abercrombie organised the voting for the motto ‘Cum Scientia Caritas’. The coat of arms and motto were granted in 1961, the year in which the College became incorporated.

Dr Abercrombie is shown seated, three-quarter length in red robes (MD Cambridge) and grey suit and with the Presidential chain. The College of General Practitioners coat of arms, with the motto, is in the top left-hand corner.
