George Crosfield was the eldest son of Joseph Crosfield, founder of Joseph Crosfield and Sons, an important Warrington soap and chemical manufacturing business. George became a partner in the family firm and took over when his father died in 1844, becoming responsible for the expansion of Crosfields in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

Reputed to be the ablest of the Crosfield brothers, he was also a director of the district Bank, a director and Vice-Chairman of the Warrington Waggon Company and an auditor of the Warrington and Stockport Railway.
