This portrait shows the sitter (aged 47) wearing the uniform of a Spanish officer: a dark tunic with gold buttons and a gold-embroidered collar, enveloped in a brown cloak. From his neck hangs the badge of a Knight Commander of the Bath; on his chest he wears the red cross of Santiago. The artist was in Brussels in 1818 to paint Prince William Frederick of Orange, where this portrait was also painted, before going on to Cambrai for the memorial review of the Allied armies.
