A heavily-textured oil painting; notice especially how the wall has been painted. The well-defined shadows (caused by the intense sunlight which floods the canvas from the left) together with the buds on the trees, evoke a bright crisp spring day. A barefoot child in a pink dress lies curled asleep like a cat sunning herself on the wall. But where does the path lead to, what is beyond the inner gateway, and who is the woman with her large, heavy basket of laundry? Possible narratives aside, Whaley evokes a sense of nostalgia for long-lost days spent in the Manx countryside.
