The gates facing Chapelfield are made with curving struts topped by stones – those representing his martyr's crown are straighter and topped by embedded glass jewels.

Inscription description

two plaques frame the gates facing the shopping centre; both are framed with a bold inscription to the side: ST STEPHENS CHURCH; that to the left reads: The church beyond these gates has stood to / the glory of God over 450 years and is / dedicated to St Stephen. It lives today as a sign of active Christian faith and worship / The gates link the church to its new neigh / bour, Chapelfield. May there be mutual / respect among all those who pass through / and may this church offer them new life That to the right: The design of these gates echoes the story of St Stephen. / He served the early church after Christ's resurrection and became its first martyr / stoned to- death because of his / faith and fearless teaching The stones inset in these gates represent those which / killed him. The other gates - to your right - are embedded / with glowing 'jewels' which stand for the martyr's crown / he gained by passing through suffering to a new life. Enter in peace
