The incident occurred during The Indian Mutiny of 1857–1859. Captain H. Wilmot gave covering fire as Colonel W. Nash and Private D. Hawkes, himself wounded, rescue a wounded comrade under fire, carrying him some distance to safety. All three were awarded the Victoria Cross.
