Carel Weight was born in London of German and Swedish descent. In the Second World War he worked as an official war artist in Italy. His paintings are often disturbing and a number of them show scenes of violent drama.

In this painting the quiet lane is the scene of a frenzied attack as a gardener beats a boy who, presumably, has been trespassing. The respectability of the surroundings is at odds with the shocking event. The plunging perspective of the wall and the motion lines behind the fleeing figures underline the sensation of fear and panic.
